Research & Development

Grant Projects

FOTON, s.r.o. has long been a lead and co-applicant on publicly funded research and development projects — in cooperation with academic institutions and commercial partners.

Why we do it

Bridging applied research and engineering

Since 2000, we have contributed instrumentation, control systems and engineering know-how to national and international research programmes — from laser and plasma physics to particle accelerators. These collaborations keep our engineering at the cutting edge and directly benefit the products and solutions we deliver to scientific and industrial customers alike.

Technology Agency of the Czech Republic

Devices for Advanced Medical Drug Delivery via the Transdermal Route Mediated by Multi-Frequency Focused Ultrasound

Provider: Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TA ČR)
Program: FW – TREND, Sub-programme 1 “Technology Leaders” (6th public competition)
Lead recipient: FOTON, s.r.o.
Co-recipients: Czech Technical University in Prague; University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice

Development of devices for advanced transdermal drug delivery using multi-frequency focused ultrasound – an alternative to oral and injectable drug administration, offering precisely localized and depth-controlled delivery of active substances that reduces the burden on the body and the environment while increasing bioavailability.

Therapeutic Rehabilitation Robot Controlled by Brain Signals

Provider: Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TA ČR)
Program: FW – TREND, Sub-programme 1 “Technology Leaders” (3rd public competition)
Lead recipient: FOTON, s.r.o.
Co-recipients: Czech Technical University in Prague; University of West Bohemia in Plzeň

Development of a therapeutic rehabilitation robot controlled directly by signals from the patient’s brain (BCI – brain-computer interface) combined with neural networks and artificial intelligence, aiming to significantly increase the effectiveness of movement re-education for paretic or plegic limbs compared to standard rehabilitation robots.

Low Temperature Plasma in Medicine

Provider: Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TA ČR)
Program: TA – Support for Applied Research and Experimental Development “ALFA”, Sub-programme 1 “Advanced Technologies, Materials and Systems” (4th public competition)
Lead recipient: FOTON, s.r.o.
Co-recipients: Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences; Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Czech Academy of Sciences; L.E.T. optomechanika Praha, spol. s r.o.; Sindat, s.r.o.

Research and development of devices for generating low-temperature plasma for biomedical use in both human and veterinary medicine, including the study of plasma interaction with living organisms and the development of prototypes for clinical testing. The project built on a long-standing collaboration with the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences and other partners.

Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic

Low Temperature Plasma for Human Medicine

Provider: Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic
Program: FV – TRIO
Coordinator: FOTON, s.r.o.
Co-recipients: Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences; Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Czech Academy of Sciences; L.E.T. optomechanika Praha, spol. s r.o.

Development of devices for generating low-temperature plasma for use in human medicine – sterilization of biological surfaces, treatment of chronic and infected wounds, burns and other dermatological indications, with applications extending into cosmetics, dentistry and surgery.

Beyond national grants

International research collaborations

Alongside nationally funded grant projects, Foton has long-standing engineering ties to major international research infrastructure — CERN (ATLAS experiment), ELI-Beamlines, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, and consortia such as LA3NET, AVA, AIDAinnova and EuPraxia-DN. Details of our company history and these collaborations are on the About page.
